Nearly 30 years later, Kathryn Newton is proving that for every generation, a slayer is born… or at least a good onscreen fashion tribute slay.
The actress’ Ready or Not 2: Here I Come co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar revealed how Newton included a subtle nod to her titular Buffy the Vampire Slayer character in the upcoming horror sequel, which premieres March 20 in theaters after its SXSW debut next month.
“What’s really funny is I didn’t know any of this,” Gellar told Entertainment Tonight. “So, Kathryn brought in a picture of Buffy in this outfit. She had sort of had this idea of what it was.”
The look in question was from the March 10, 1997 pilot episode ‘Welcome to the Hellmouth’, in which Buffy dons a blue button-down top over a white tank top, complete with a messy updo and wispy bangs.

Gellar recounted, “And then I’m in the first scene with her, and I was like, ‘You know, your outfit reminds me of something.’ And she was like, ‘Does it?’ And so, I have a great side-by-side. Yeah, the hairdo is exactly the same.”
A series spin-off of Joss Whedon’s 1992 cult classic, Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran for seven seasons on The WB and UPN from 1997 to 2003, starring Gellar as the eponymous chosen Valley Girl, who frequently saves the world in between class. Gellar reprises the role in the pilot for the Hulu continuation Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale.
In Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, after killing her groom and the rest of the Le Domas family in the first film, Grace (Samara Weaving) is reunited with her estranged younger sister Faith (Newton), with whom she has to face off against a new flock of wealthy killers, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shawn Hatosy, Néstor Carbonell, Kevin Durand, Olivia Cheng and David Cronenberg, with Elijah Wood as the satanic cult’s lawyer.
