EXCLUSIVE: A second and final season of Black Sands is coming back to the Viaplay Streaming Service in the U.S. The first season of the dark Icelandic crime drama was well received, scoring numerous award noms at home and positive reviews in the English-language press. Season 2 will drop on the Nordic drama-skewed Viaplay Streaming Service on May 14. Two episodes of the eight-part series will launch each week.
As well as the Season 2 news, we have a first-look at the trailer for the upcoming run and a teaser of what to expect.
With Iceland’s titular black sands serving as the backdrop, the first season of the show followed Anita, a troubled police officer played by Aldis Amah Hamilton (The Valhalla Murders) who also co-writes the series. Hamilton’s character is forced back to her hometown where she begins tracking a serial killer who has been operating for years, but disguising the murders as accidents.
“Maybe it’s time you knew the truth,” says the voiceover as a sweeping shot of the black sands opens the Season 2 trailer.

The second season picks up the action fourteen months after the events of the first run. Set during a bleak Arctic winter, the mystery deepens with the strange death of an elderly woman and another shocking murder. As the investigation unfolds, the local town’s dark history is revealed.
“It fills me with joy to see that Black Sands continues to intrigue,” said lead actor and co-writer Hamilton. “It was always our dream for this story to be two halves that would come together, so writing it felt very urgent, knowing this would be the grand finale. We hope this season will create space for important conversations regarding family, grief and inheritance… in its many shapes and forms.”
Viaplay Content Distribution snagged the SVOD rights for the US, Germany, and the UK, where Season 1 went out on UKTV. All3Media International distributes the series, which is Icelandic-language with English subtitles. Season 2 is also launching in Germany, starting May 18.
Joan Cruells, VP Partnership & Growth, International SVOD, Viaplay Group said: “Black Sands remains one of Iceland’s most acclaimed crime dramas, with its first season performing exceptionally well across Viaplay’s specialized streaming service in the U.S., UK and Germany. We’re thrilled to bring the gripping and addictive second season to subscribers this May.”
