New Line/Blumhouse/Atomic Monster’s Lee Cronin’s The Mummy with a $22M net production is bound to be profitable after a $34M global start with $20.5M abroad in 77 markets/14K screens and $13.5M stateside. It was built to work abroad. It’s gotta be the brand name because total awareness on tracking was quite strong in the states. The offshore opening is in line with Scream VI, Evil Dead Rise, Halloween Ends, Terrifier 3, Saw X, and The Curse of La Llorona. Like for likes have the Cronin directed and written movie -12% behind Smile 2 and -9% behind Evil Dead Rise.
What’s interesting here is that some of the territory openings for Mummy are bigger than Blumhouse’s Wolf Man in reported, i.e. leading market Mexico with $2.2M (higher than Wolf Man‘s entire $1.7M reported cume and not far from 28 Years Later‘s $2.7M opening), UK’s $1.4M (literally what Wolf Man ended its run at), Spain with $1.1M (again, defeats Wolf Man‘s $890K cume, and just a smidge under the $1.2M of 28 Years Later), France $1M (just $100K from taking over the entire $1.1M cume of Wolf Man), Indonesia $993K (blows away Wolf Man‘s final cume of $251K), Germany $928K (not far from 28 Years Later‘s $1.3M reported start and slaying Ready or Not 2‘s $389K opening), Italy with $877K (scares away Ready or Not 2‘s $328K debut), India with $855K (very big next to the under $100K final cumes of Ready or Not 2 and Wolf Man), Malaysia at $835K (higher than the final reported $707K of Smile 2), Brazil with $771K (beats the last reported $450K cume of Ready or Not 2), Australia at $683K (+79% over Ready or Not 2 start), and Colombia with $674K (+122% over the reported start of 28 Years Later).
The global Imax network of 690 screens minted $2M alone for the Cronin pic.
In local fare, Sony Pictures International Productions’ YA pic Boulevard expanded to three markets in Latin America to drive the weekend gross to $1.8M and the running cume to $2.5M. Mexico’s bow was $1M, followed by Peru with $440K and Ecuador with $160K. In Spain, the film added $215K in its second weekend, lifting the local cume to $845K. Directed by Sonia Méndez, Boulevard follows two high school outcasts who find unexpected connection despite their personal demons. As Halsey battles addiction and Luke confronts his own darkness, their growing feelings force them to question if love is worth the risk.
