EXCLUSIVE: After a secret screening at Sundance, Miss You, Love You, a film that stars Allison Janney and Andrew Rannells has found a home.
HBO has snapped up the rights to the film, which was written and directed by Jim Rash.
Deadline broke the news about the film in 2024 and revealed that it received a starry screening at the final Sundance, attended by Julia Roberts. HBO was clearly also interested, picking up the film and making it an HBO Original that debuts on Friday May 29 at 8pm.
It follows a blunt, grieving widow, Diane Patterson (Janney), who is forced to plan her husband’s funeral with a total stranger: her estranged son’s assistant, Jamie Simms (Rannells). As they fumble through grief and their strange, darkly funny circumstances, buried secrets and long-held resentments surface, but their partnership becomes an unlikely conduit for connection, laughter, and healing for this mother and her unexpected surrogate son.

Miss You, Love You is produced by Kevin Walsh, Nat Faxon, Gigi Pritzker and Rachel Shane for Madison Wells. Michael Bowes serves as exec producer, Tammy Allen is co-producer and Liz Lippman is an associate producer.
Rash said he was “absolutely thrilled”. “To be championed by HBO and included among their exemplary library of films and series is humbling. It’s the perfect home,” he added.
Francesca Orsi, EVP, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, said, “Jim Rash has crafted a film that masterfully navigates grief, family, and the weight of buried trauma with a comedic lightness that never undercuts its depth. At its center, Allison Janney and Andrew Rannells deliver beautifully calibrated performances as Diane and Jamie, two people bound by loss, misunderstanding. We’re thrilled to bring this beautifully human story into the HBO Films family and can’t wait for audiences to experience it.”
“Jim Rash has written an intimate, character-driven story about unexpected connection and humor in the midst of profound loss,” added Walsh, Faxon, Pritzker and Shane. “Allison Janney and Andrew Rannells bring such specificity and heart to these roles, reminding us that even in life’s most difficult moments, there is room for healing, compassion, and even laughter. We’re so proud to bring this story to audiences alongside our partners at HBO.”
